Rose Honey

Rose syrup, also known as rose honey, is not actual honey but a syrup made from rose petals. The name misleadingly refers to honey, as true honey is a product made by bees, while rose syrup is a plant-based concoction derived from rose petals. Although the healing properties of roses are lesser known, they offer various beneficial effects such as astringent, heart-strengthening, and stabilizing for the skin and mucous membranes. It can be used in many ways, including making syrup, tea, or even jam. Not only for personal consumption, but it’s also an excellent choice as a gift.

Rose syrup is available for purchase in specialty food stores or online, but it can also be made at home. In the latter case, the quality of ingredients and adherence to hygiene rules are crucial.

Homemade Rose Honey Preparation

Preparation:

Picking Rose Petals: As a first step, fresh, clean rose petals need to be collected. Damascus roses or other fragrant rose varieties are commonly used for this purpose.

Ingredients:

  • 30 rose petals
  • Honey (acacia or liquid flower honey)
  • Sterilized glass jar with a tight-fitting lid

Steps to Make Rose Syrup:

  1. Start by gently washing the petals.
  2. Place them in the glass jar, filling about ¾ of the jar.
  3. Add enough honey to cover the petals.
  4. Close the jar with a tightly fitting lid and place it in a sunny spot.
  5. If needed, add more honey after 2 days.
  6. Around a month, let it mature while occasionally turning the jar upside down and back.
  7. Afterward, strain and store in a cool place until use.

Uses of Rose Syrup:

  • For brushing the mouths of infants with oral ulcers.
  • As an immune booster and natural antifungal for adults.
  • Sweetening berry fruits, fruit salads, and desserts.

This syrup is not only used as a sweetener but can also be an excellent flavor enhancer for both dishes and beverages. It’s frequently employed in baking and cooking due to the pleasant aroma and rich taste it adds to the food.

It’s important to note that honey is not recommended for children under the age of one, as well as for those who may be allergic to honey or other bee products. People with diabetes should consume honey in moderation due to its naturally high sugar content.
